The Pursuit of Perfection
I found my copy of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales and I’ve been reading them to the boys. The last one we read was The Fir Tree, about a tree that always wants to be taller or to know where the other trees go when they are chopped down. Only when he becomes a Christmas tree and there is no more “next best thing” does he realize that he was happy in the forest. I asked Liam what the lesson was, and he thought maybe he shouldn’t be in such a hurry to grow up. I responded that, yeah, he should enjoy his journey.
I was reminded of this aphorism attributed to Voltaire. We should all try keep the perfect from being the enemy of the good. 🍻
